DATE: Monday, July 24, 2023

TOPIC: Stop The Blame Game

MEMORISE: And Samuel said, "What have you done? Saul said, "When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash (1 Samuel 13:11).

READ: Genesis 3:8-13

[8].   And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

[9].   Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

[10].   So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

[11].   And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

[12].  Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

[13].  And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

EXPOSITION

The human nature loves to be praised and eulogised but doesn't like to be corrected, or criticised. The natural man is quick to point accusing fingers at others, but finds it difficult to accept correction, or discipline when he errs. Adam was the one that God gave the command to keep the garden, to be assisted by his wife. On one of the occasions that God visited them as usual, things had turned sore-sin had infiltrated. Then, the following conversations ensued;

God: Where are you?

Adam: I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.

God: Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree which I commanded you that you should not eat?

Adam: The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree and l ate.

God: What is this you have done? (Turning to the woman)

Eve:The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and l ate."

None of them was ready to take the blame. They were both passing the buck-characteristic of the human nature. Be humble enough to be confronted and corrected when at fault. Be open to divine censure through God's Word (Heb. 12-5-6). Learn from Ahab humility and submission to divine reprimand (1 Kgs. 21 27-29), unlike the haughty and unrepentant Saul (1 Sam. 13:11-12).

Learn to admit your mistakes and ask for forgiveness, instead of shifting blames and giving excuses
