International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

TOPIC: THE DANGER OF SLAVERY MENTALITY

READ: Exodus 6:6-9

[6]Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:

[7]And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

[8]And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.

[9]And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

MEMORISE: So Moses spoke thus to the children of Israel; but they did not heed Moses, because of anguish of spirit and cruel bondage (Exodus 6:9)

After the children of Israel had spent 430 years in Egypt, God visited them to bring them out of the land with mighty hands. Being slaves to the Egyptians for many years, slavery had become a mindset, a generational way of life to them. God came to move them out of bondage, but they did not bother to leave their servitude. Their mentality, perceptions of life, and the way they thought of themselves had changed. They could no longer think as independent persons, but like slaves. When the Egyptians pursued them toward the Red Sea, they were terrified, despite the miracles God did before them in Egypt. They preferred to return to Egypt in the early stage of their Exodus, because of their slavery mentality (Exod. 14:10-12). Aren't we still having slavery mentality today, despite the abolition of slavery as commemorated today internationally?

What is slavery mentality? It is a mental attitude of inferiority complex and feeling of a need to be controlled by others. A person who is enslaved by word, thought or deed has a slavery mentality. When you think that someone else is superior to you because of low self-esteem, you carry a slavery mentality. The Israelites physicaly left Egypt, but their minds were still there. They repeatedly thought of going back to Egypt (Exod. 16:33;17:3; Num. 11:5-6;14:1-4). It is because of this mentality that all the elderly ones who left Egypt, aside Joshua and Caleb, could not enter the Promised Land. The bird born in a cage thinks flying is an illness. What is your perception of life? How do you think about yourself?

In the same manner today, there are signs to know that someone has a slavery mentality. They include lack of independent decision-making, inability to think for oneself, living one's life by the views, opinions and beliefs of others, working and living for survival alone, fear to take rightful risks, and complaint without taking personal responsibility. To enter the Promised Land God has for you in this world, you have to deal with your own slavery mentality, immediately.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, get rid from my heart, slavery mentality, for me to enjoy the freedom that is in the Gospel.

2. Lord, give me inner capacity to free myself from self-imposed bondages.

3. Lord, give the children from less privileged backgrounds a new perception to life, so that they can be free from slavery mentality.
